At Westchester Reform Temple we try to satisfy all appetites for Jewish soulfood, both spiritual and physical. Our ever-evolving Reform movement seeks to find in ancient traditions, meaningful expressions of prayer, song, ritual, study and community involvement. The mission of WRT is to ensure the perpetuation of the Jewish people and to cultivate a love o f our Jewish heritage. We strive to realize this through our five pillars of Worship, Community, Learning, Social Action and Responsibility for Jews throughout the world. As an open community, we are committed to creating a warm and welcoming religious home for people of all ages, for families of all configurations, backgrounds and sexual orientation.
WRT was founded in 1953 and several years ago completed a new "green" sanctuary. The unique east wall of glass, turns nature and the changing seasons into an inspiring backdrop for worship . The campus also includes large event spaces, new Religious School classrooms, and Early Childhood Education wing , and Beit Midrash center of study. To meet the needs of a diverse, multigenerational community, our facilities provide space for contemplation and celebration, and they reflect our ethic to be welcoming and inclusive to those with special needs.
WRT has a long unique partnership with the Amazing Afternoons program. Over fifty teenage and adult volunteers participate weekly at the Edward Williams School in Mount Vernon, as after school tutors and mentors. There they lead various enrichment activities which include chess, sports, music, art and literacy projects. Temple youth who tutor at Amazing Afternoons for their Mitzvah projects, describe the experiences as transformative in opening their eyes and hearts to the needs of children who live close by, but in a different world . Many WRT teens have generously contributed their Bar and Bat Mitzvah gifts, and the congregation raises substantial funds to insure the ongoing support of Amazing Afternoons.
