Dorothy E. Yewer, Benefit Chair/Co-Founder

Picture
Dorothy Yewer is the Co-Founder and Chair of the Annual Children’s Benefit Concert that has grossed over $1,000,000 to send over 500 at risk youth to the life altering camp Wagon Road. This camp gives these children the opportunity to develop and play in the natural world where they learn to make positive choices in a safe and nurturing environment. The Benefit Concert provides the vehicle to raise the funds for this mission.

She served, with a dedicated group of peers, on the Advisory Board for the Amazing Afternoons program at the Edward Williams School in Mount Vernon, New York, from 2009 until state funding ended for the program in 2018. She managed book drives, gift and clothing drives for the children in their elementary years. She continues to work with several mentees as they have grown into young adults, some of whom are pursuing college degrees.

Dorothy earned her BA from St. Lawrence University where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She was an advertising sales executive at Creative Theatre Marketing in NYC prior to moving to Scarsdale, New York where she raised her two daughters. Her clients ranged from New York University to local Chambers of Commerce, and tourist attractions in the tri state area.  She has since worked in sales for a variety of organizations, including Rev Up Consultants, and currently organizes and oversees numerous author events at Diane’s Books of Greenwich.

She has served as the Warden and a Vestry member for the historic Church of St. James the Less in Scarsdale. She was an active member of the Organ Committee chaired by internationally acclaimed orchestral conductor and concert organist Justin Bischof, which saw the installation of a $2,000,000 Klais organ from Bonn Germany. She chaired the Music Committee, the Publicity Committee, and served on the Stewardship Committee. Additional volunteer work includes Co-Chair of the Camp Committee at the Scarsdale Golf Club, where she reinstated and oversaw a popular day camp. She served as the Committee Chair for the Literacy program of the Junior League of Central Westchester. The committee’s outreach work included reading to children in local shelters and bringing books to these children to create their own libraries. In addition, she served on the Nominating Committee for the League.

She has worked with the Cheley Foundation in Colorado for many years to send inner city youth to sleepaway camp at Sanborn Western Camps in Florissant, Colorado. The children have the chance to explore the beauties of the Colorado Rockies in a safe and encouraging environment.

She was mentored by the inspirational Mary Figueroa, whose dedication to improving the lives of inner-city youth has informed her desire to get kids out of the city and into the natural world.
